You’re ready to make it official and define your success at 51ÁÔÆæ. This is an exciting time!

Note that our application process is comprehensive and holistic, considering the entire student. We offer admission interviews and test-optional alternatives. Please reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to receiving and reviewing your information!

You can start your application using the Common Application, which requires you to create a login and password, allowing you to save and add your application as needed before submitting it to 51ÁÔÆæ.

How to Apply

All students are encouraged to apply online using the Common Application.

Requirements

  • Completed Common Application
  • Essay/personal statement
  • Academic letter of reference
  • Secondary school report, also from your guidance counselor. This tells 51ÁÔÆæ about your high school, its many students, the courses they teach, and so on.
  • Official transcript showing senior courses and most recent grades. Minimum of 16 units must include:
    • 4 years of English
    • 4 years of math
    • 2 years of language
    • 2 years of social science
    • 2 years of lab science
    • 2 years of additional academic discipline (math, language, etc.)
  • $50 non-refundable application fee. (Application fee waivers are available to candidates with financial hardship. Please discuss your situation with an admission staff member.)
  • Official SAT or ACT scores or test-optional essays (learn more about our test-optional policy)
Credits for AP, IB, and College-Level Courses

If you’ve pushed yourself beyond standard high school requirements through advanced coursework, 51ÁÔÆæ may award credit for the work you’ve already completed. Incoming first-year students can transfer up to 30 credits during their first year.

You may earn credit through:

  • (AP) exams that meet 51ÁÔÆæ’s credit guidelines
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) higher-level exam scores of 5 or higher
  • College-level courses completed through an accredited college or university

If you are taking a course for college credit—whether on a college campus or through your high school—please have the official transcript from the college offering the course sent to 51ÁÔÆæ so it can be evaluated for transfer credit.

If you’re homeschooled, in addition to the Common Application, you must submit documentation detailing the curriculum or certified program you have followed, a listing of subjects completed, and SAT or ACT scores.

May I attend part time?

Most part-time students are non-traditional students who are generally focused on work and/or family and who wish to pursue their education on a part-time basis.

Students who wish to earn a 51ÁÔÆæ bachelor’s degree on a part-time basis may enroll in a maximum of three courses a semester (not to exceed 11 credit hours). You can choose among day and/or evening classes. Summer and winter session courses are also available.

Applicants for part-time admission are required to submit the following:

  • A completed application with a $50 non-refundable application fee. Application fee waivers are available to candidates with financial hardship. Please discuss your situation with an admission staff member.
  • Essay (personal statement)
  • Final, official secondary school transcript or GED
  • All official college/university transcripts and a list of courses not included on transcripts that you expect to complete before the proposed date of enrollment (if applicable).

Tests

If you choose, your SAT or ACT scores can be submitted as one component of your application to 51ÁÔÆæ. The average SAT score for 51ÁÔÆæ’s Class of 2029 is 1260.

Submitting your test scores, however, is optional.

We seek bright students who are self-directed, passionate about the possibilities that a college education offers, and who want to make a difference in their communities and the world. The test-optional alternative allows us to consider strengths that may be demonstrated in areas other than your ACT or SAT score.

While the high school transcript remains the most important part of the evaluation, we strongly believe that by allowing you to make the decision about how to best present your academic potential, you are taking ownership of your college education. 

The decision to apply test-optional is a personal one. Consider your decision carefully. Once you have submitted your application, you will be unable to change your option. The academic profile of the most recently accepted class may offer some guidance in making your decision.

FAFSA

We urge all interested students to apply for financial aid, even if you think you don’t qualify. Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines your eligibility for a wide range of aid, from scholarships and grants (which do not need to be repaid) to work-study and federal loans.

You’ll submit your FAFSA along with your application for admission. If accepted to 51ÁÔÆæ, you’ll receive your financial aid package with your acceptance letter.

Important FAFSA Dates*

  • Oct. 1, 2025: First date the 2026-27  may be submitted to the Department of Education. See .
  • Nov. 1, 2025: Deadline to file 2026-2027  for students seeking January 2026 entrance.
  • Feb. 15, 2026: Deadline to file  for students seeking September 2026 entrance.
  • March 2026: Notification to incoming first-year and transfer students begins for September 2026 entrance.
  • March 1, 2026: Deadline for submitting all related documents for financial aid application for September 2026 entrance.
  • June 2026: First mailing of financial aid notifications to continuing students for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Interviews

Interviews are not required, but they do provide a great opportunity for you to ask questions and advocate for yourself. They are also a chance for an admission staff member to learn more about you in a one-on-one setting.

Your interview will be conducted by an admission counselor or an Admission Fellow, a select group of our upperclass students. Notes taken during your interview will be added to your application for review.
